LOCATION

Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) is the largest and best-known spa resort in the
Czech Republic. The founding and development of Karlovy Vary was connected
with the curative effect of its warm mineral springs, which permeates
the whole spirit of the city. The city has also a rich cultural tradition.
The spa society meeting has had an increasingly international character
since the early 18th century (e.g. Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Peter the
Great).

The city's spa centre, which is the most attractive from the visitors'
point-of-view, is situated around the meandering Teplá River. It is
surrounded with hilly landscapes and forests typical of the scenery for
spas. Moser glass and Karlovarská Becherovka (38% alcohol, 10% of sugar,
known as "the thirteenth spring"), are the traditional specialties of
Karlovy Vary. The Karlovy Vary International film festival annually
presents more than 200 category A films from the whole world.

GETTING THERE

The town is located not far from the Czech-German border on the
E48 road. The local airport has a regular connection with Prague and
Moscow. Karlovy Vary has a very good bus connection with Prague (125 km)
and can be also reached via train through border crossing Schirnding .
Cheb (60 km from town Schirnding) or through Johanngeorgenstadt.

SOCIAL EVENTS

The TSD 2005 conference will also include an excursion to the Becherovka
distillery and trips to Loket castle, Cheb town, Spa Frantiskovy Lazne and
the neighbouring nature reserve.
