Two PhD positions in spoken document retrieval

The Human Media Interaction (HMI) group of the Faculty of Electrical 
Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of 
Twente is involved in several national and international R&D projects 
with a strong focus on multimedia indexing and retrieval. Currently 
funding for two 4 year PhD positions is available. Successful 
applicants will join the HMI language & speech technology team to work 
on speech recognition applied in the context of multimedia retrieval. 
The work will partly be carried out in the framework of EU projects 
that are about to start. In addition to several aspects of spoken 
document retrieval using large vocabulary speech recognition for 
various languages including Dutch, German and Spanish, it will be 
possible to address related research issues, e.g. cross-media indexing 
and cross-language retrieval.

Both positions will be available from January 1, 2006.

Requirements

- affinity and experience with speech and language 
technology, demonstrated by an academic degree in e.g., phonetics, 
computational linguistics, computer science
- good programming and scripting skills in a Linux/Unix environment
- proficiency of one of the target languages (Dutch, German or Spanish) 
is a plus.

Conditions of employment

- the PhD salary starts at EUR 1813 gross per month and grows to EUR 
2283 gross per month (figures based on full-time employment). Duration 
of the contract: four years. Hours per week: 32-40. PhD students will 
be able to participate in the Dutch research school for Information and 
Knowledge Systems (SIKS,http://www.siks.nl/).
