CALL FOR POSTERS AND DEMOS
http://samt2006.org/call_pd.html

First international conference on Semantics And digital Media Technology (SAMT 2006)
Former European Workshop on the Integration of knowledge, semantic and digital Media Technologies (EWIMT)
December 6-8, 2006
Athens, Greece
http://samt2006.org/
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OBJECTIVES
----------

The first international conference on Semantics And digital Media Technology (SAMT) targets to narrow the large disparity between the lowlevel descriptors that can be computed automatically from multimedia content and the richness and subjectivity of semantics in user queries and human interpretations of audiovisual media - The Semantic Gap.

Besides the scientific paper track, SAMT 2006 asks for poster and demo contributions that will be presented in a number of special sessions during the conference. Combined poster and demo sessions will give an opportunity for presenting late-breaking results, ongoing research projects, and speculative or innovative work in progress. Posters and demos are intended to provide authors and participants with the ability to connect with each other and to engage in discussions about the work. Technical posters, reports on systems under development, descriptions of completed work, work in progress, and objectives or results of ongoing projects, initiatives or standardization activities are all welcome. Demos are intended to showcase innovative semantic multimedia related implementations, systems and technologies. In principle, posters may be backed up with demos, and vice versa. Posters and demos are intended to convey a scientific result or work in progress and are not intended as !
 advertisements for software packages.

In cooperation with the European Commission DG Information Society, the third day of the conference is dedicated to featuring the launch of the 7th Framework ICT Research programme and keynote talks from EC representatives. A projects special poster session will follow the talks (http://samt2006.org/projects.html).

REQUESTED CONTRIBUTIONS
-----------------------

* Late-breaking and Speculative Results

Significant and original ideas with promising approaches to resolve open problems in semantic multimedia research that are in an early stage and have not been verified and tested sufficiently to meet the requirements of a scientific publication. Submissions in this area will be evaluated like a scientific paper but limited to the aspects of originality, relevance and significance.

* Descriptions of System Demonstrations

Descriptions (preferably accompanied by demonstration) of new systems that use semantic multimedia technologies to solve important real world problems. We are also looking for software infrastructure supporting the development of systems that use such technologies. Systems will be evaluated based on novelty and significance of the application as well as the use of multimedia and Semantic Web technologies for solving the problem. The main criteria for contributions on infrastructure is successful use in existing applications as well as uniqueness of the provided services.

* Projects and Initiatives

Descriptions of the objectives and results of ongoing projects and initiatives or standardization activities. The aim is to provide an overview of ongoing work in the area of the semantic multimedia. A number of EU IST projects working in the scope of SAMT topics will be invited for submission to the projects special poster session, but proposals for additional projects, European or non-European ones, is open under the same submission and review process. Contributions in this area will be evaluated based on the importance and uniqueness of the objectives. Further criteria for project descriptions are the significance of results. Descriptions of initiatives and standardization activities will also be evaluated with respect to the expected impact on the community.

TOPICS
------

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

    * Integration of multimedia processing and Semantic Web technologies
    * Multimedia ontologies and infrastructures
    * Knowledge assisted multimedia data mining
    * Knowledge based inference for semi-automatic semantic media annotation
    * Integration of content-based image/video analysis with natural language and speech processing
    * Multimodal techniques, high dimensionality reduction and low-level feature fusion
    * Revelance feedback for finding semantics
    * Semantic-driven multimedia indexing and retrieval
    * Metadata management for multimedia
    * Browsing large multimedia archives
    * Scalable, semantic-driven multimedia content adaptation and summarization
    * Interfaces and personalisation for interaction with large multimedia repositories
    * Semantics-driven multimedia presentation generation
    * Content, user, network and semantics-aware media engineering
    * Standards bridging the multimedia and knowledge domains

SUBMISSION
----------

SAMT 2006 welcomes submission to the poster and demo session, online at http://samt2006.org/submission_pd.html. Authors must submit a two-page paper with a short abstract for evaluation. Only submissions in PDF format are acceptable. Papers should be formatted according to IEEE Transactions/Journals/Letters style (http://www.ieee.org/web/publications/authors/transjnl/index.html). Submissions should be labeled as a demo, a poster, or both. If a poster will be accompanied by a live software demonstration, authors are requested to submit an additional one-page explanation of the demo, which will not be included in the poster / demo proceedings. Submit the demo explanation as the third page of your two-page paper. Authors should also indicate whether a submission concerns a project and if so, notify the chair of the projects special poster session, Jose Martinez <JoseM.Martinez at uam.es>.

All poster submissions will be subject to review by at least two reviewers in the program committee. Papers must clearly demonstrate relevance to semantic multimedia technologies. Decisions about acceptance will be based on relevance to the SAMT topics, originality, potential significance and clarity.

Authors submitting a paper to the scientific track in SAMT 2006, may also submit the same work for consideration in the poster and demo track, either before or after result notification for the full paper. For example, a demo can be provided for an accepted paper, or a poster can be used to present work that was insufficiently mature for the research track.

Poster and demo papers will be published in separate poster / demo proceedings and will be handed out to all participants of SAMT.
