Oxford University Computing Laboratory

Accurate and Efficient Parsing of Biomedical Text
            Postdoctoral Research post
              32 months duration

Oxford University Computing Laboratory has a vacancy for a Postdoctoral
Researcher to work on an EPSRC funded project entitled Accurate and
Efficient Parsing of Biomedical Text. The aim of this project is to take
an existing natural language parser of English, currently tuned for
newspaper text, and adapt it to biomedical text. How to adapt
domain-dependent parsers to new domains is one of the key questions facing
researchers in natural language parsing. A further aim is to adapt an
existing named entity recogniser to recognise biological entities such as
genes and proteins, and to integrate the named entity recogniser into the
parser. The creation of a language processing tool which can infer the
grammatical relations between words and simultaneously identify biological
entities has the potential to be of huge benefit to the biomedical
research community, which is struggling to manage the vast amount of
research output being produced.

The successful applicant will work with Dr Stephen Clark, as part of a
rapidly growing Computational Linguistics group
(http://www.clg.ox.ac.uk/). Informal enquiries about the post and
proposed research can be made to stephen.clark at comlab.ox.ac.uk. All
relevant papers relating to the parser can be obtained from:
http://web.comlab.ox.ac.uk/stephen.clark/.

Salary will be on the University grade 07S scale (currently 25,889 -
31,840 GBP p.a.).

The post is available from 1st October 2007, is pensionable, includes
an annual leave entitlement of 38 days per year inclusive of public
holidays and university closed periods and is tenable for up to
thirty-two months.

Further details, including the selection criteria and application
procedure are available from http://www.comlab.ox.ac.uk or via email
request to: text07 at comlab.ox.ac.uk

The closing date for applications is 6th July 2007.

Oxford University is an Equal Opportunities Employer.
