3 VACANCIES FOR RESEARCHERS IN BIOMEDICAL TEXT MINING

1 Post-doc researcher Text Mining (4 years)
1 Post-doc researcher Molecular Biology (4 years)
1 Ph.D. researcher Text Mining (4 years)

Application deadline: September 15, 2007

The positions, funded by the University of Antwerp Research Council
in the BOF-GOA programme, are available in the context of an
interdisciplinary project bringing together top research groups in
molecular genetics, text mining and data mining. The aim of the
project is to develop text and data mining technology for extracting
useful information from the vast amount of data available in
heterogeneous knowledge bases. The primary application is in gene
prioritization and hypothesis building. Using text and data mining,
facts will be extracted from the biomedical literature but also from
semi-structured or structured databases on diseases, pathways,
domains and sequences. A secondary goal of the project is to transfer
the developed technology to other knowledge management applications.

*** Vacancy 1: Post-doc researcher Text Mining

We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher with a PhD in
computational linguistics, computer science or a related area, with
an interest in biomedical text mining. The scientist will join the
CNTS computational linguistics research group (University of Antwerp)
and work in close cooperation with researchers from the department of
Molecular Genetics and ADReM (data mining), also located at the
University of Antwerp. Your task will be to develop advanced text
mining techniques and apply them in the biomedical domain and in
knowledge management applications in general. The position is for
four years, fulltime.
Profile
· You have a PhD in Computational Linguistics, Artificial
Intelligence, Computer Science or a related area
· You preferably have a strong track record and experience in
statistical or machine learning approaches to natural language
processing
· You have excellent programming skills and a good command of
spoken and written English
· You know how to do fundamental research, but you also like
creating natural language processing software
· You are a team player and you like to coach students and junior

Biochemistry / Biotechnology / Bioinformatics)
· You have several years experience in life science research, and
are well-versed in the genetic and functional aspects of disease.
· You are well acquainted with on-line databases such as Pubmed,
OMIM, KEGG, GO. Excellent knowledge of data/literature mining is a plus.
· You have an interest in and affinity for informatics.
