Research Assistant/Research Associate

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant/Research Associate who
has expertise in hearing or speech perception research. The post holder
will work on a project concerned with improving the intelligibility of
poor quality speech recordings arising in law enforcement situations.

The project is part of the Centre for Law Enforcement Research (CLEAR)
which has just been set up in collaboration with Imperial College London
and funded by the UK Home Office. Within the project we aim to (i)
develop reliable procedures for the evaluation of speech cleaning
methods, including the synthesis of test materials, (ii) to develop
techniques for the automatic assessment and diagnosis of recording
quality defects, (iii) to evaluate existing speech cleaning tools, and
(iv) to develop new algorithms and approaches with improved performance.

The post holder will be based at UCL and focus on the human side of the
problem: testing the performance of speech cleaning methods on
listeners, developing predictive models of intelligibility using
knowledge of hearing and speech perception, and improving listener
transcription performance through a better understanding of human
factors. In addition the post holder will collaborate with the
engineering team at Imperial College, and the manager of the CLEAR
laboratory. The successful applicant will hold a first degree in Speech
and Hearing Science, Psychology, or a related subject. Research
experience and a PhD in a relevant area are desirable.

This is a fixed term appointment for up to five years.

The closing date for applications is 7 November 2007
