University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The Multimodal Information Access and Synthesis (MIAS) Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Department of Computer Science, is offering paid opportunities for students to attend the 2008 Data Sciences Summer Institute (DSSI) in Urbana, Illinois. The DSSI is an intense eight-week immersion into the exciting field of Information Science, and consists of the following integrated components: Mathematical Foundations, Specialized Tutorials, Research Projects, and a Guest Speaker series. Most DSSI activities will occur in the Computer Science Department. You may learn more about both the MIAS Center and the DSSI at http://mias.uiuc.edu<http://mias.uiuc.edu/>.

The DSSI combines intensive mathematical studies, with collaborative, publishable research projects, and week-long immersive tutorials in specific areas of study, including:

- Databases and information integration
- Natural language processing and information extraction
- Computer vision
- Information retrieval and web information access
- Machine learning and data mining

DSSI applicants should by fluent in one or more object-oriented programming languages and have some exposure to one or more of the following: data structures, software principles, numerical methods, and theory of computation. Although the summer school is oriented toward computer science majors, closely related technical majors with a strong interest in Information Science and sufficient background in computer science and mathematics are encouraged to apply.

The Data Sciences Summer Institute begins May 19, 2008 and concludes on July 11, 2008.

Selected students will receive a stipend of $3,600 (graduate-level students) or $2,400 (undergraduate-level students) for the eight-week period. Housing and most meals also will be provided at no cost to the student through a secure and fully-staffed private dormitory located a short walk from the department.

If you would like to:

- Contribute side-by-side with world-renowned researchers on an authentic, publishable research project in information science
- Gain practical experience in these areas of study
- Participate in an intensive study in the mathematical foundations of information science

Then please join us in Urbana-Champaign this summer.

Review of applications will begin immediately; all interested students should apply at your earliest convenience. The application form is available at: http://mias.uiuc.edu/dssi/application. General information is at: http://mias.uiuc.edu. Please e-mail inquiries to: contact at mias.uiuc.edu<mailto:contact at mias.uiuc.edu>

Please distribute this e-mail announcement to all interested students.
