Second ISCA Workshop on Speech and Language Technology in Education

 

3rd - 5th September 2009, Wroxall Abbey Estate, Warwickshire, England

You are cordially invited to submit papers for presentation at SLaTE
2009.

The ISCA (International Speech Communication Association) Special
Interest Group

on Speech and Language Technology in Education (SLaTE) promotes the use
of

speech and natural language processing for education, and provides a
forum 

for exchanging news of recent research developments and other matters of
interest

in this topic. For further information see the SLaTE website:
http://www.sigslate.org 

 

SLaTE 2009 is the second ISCA Workshop on Speech and Language Technology
in

Education.  It follows SLaTE 2007, held in Farmington, Pennsylvania,
USA, and has

its origins in the STiLL meeting organized by KTH in Marholmen, Sweden,
in 1998. 

The SLaTE 2009 workshop website can be accessed from the SLaTE website,
or

The workshop will focus on research issues, applications, development
tools and

collaboration.  It will be concerned with all topics which concern
speech and

language technology for education. Papers will discuss theories,
applications, 

evaluation, limitations, persistent difficulties, general research tools
and techniques.

Papers that critically evaluate approaches or processing strategies will
be especially

welcome, as will prototype demonstrations of real-world applications.

 

The scope of acceptable topic interests includes but is not limited to:

 

 * Use of speech recognition for education 

 * Use of natural language processing for education 

 * Use of spoken language dialogue for education 

 * Applications using speech and/or natural language processing for
education 

 * Intelligent tutoring systems using speech and natural language 

 * Tutor assessment 

 

There will be oral and poster sessions as well as demonstrations of
software.

IMPORTANT DATES:

Full 4-page papers should be submitted as PDF attachments to an email
with subject

'SLaTE 2009 submission' to Martin Russell (m.j.russell at bham.ac.uk) by
May 8, 2009.

Notification of acceptance or rejection of papers will be given by July
8, 2009

 

SLaTE 2009 will be held at Wroxall Abbey Estate, in Warwickshire
England,

immediately before Interspeech 2009 (http://www.interspeech2009.org).

 

The workshop fee will include all accommodation and meals at Wroxall
Abbey.

Situated in 27 acres of open parkland, the Estate occupies a unique
setting amidst

the peace and tranquillity of the Warwickshire countryside. Once the
country seat of

Sir Christopher Wren, Wroxall boasts a magnificent collection of listed
buildings and

private grounds, which made it an ideal venue for the workshop. Wroxall
is situated

just 10 miles from Birmingham International Airport, 13 miles from
Stratford-upon-

Avon and 6 miles from Warwick. It is anticipated that visits to
Stratford and Warwick 

will be included in the social programme.
