PhD position in Instrumental Speech Synthesis Evaluation at TU Berlin

Deutsche Telekom Laboratories (T-Labs) is a joint scientific research institute of Deutsche Telekom AG and Berlin Institute of Technology (TU Berlin). We carry out pioneering research into innovative information and telecommunication technologies, addressing in particular human interaction,
networking and security issues. The Laboratories are located on the campus of TU Berlin, with the goal of promoting the interaction between science and business through physical proximity.

For the Quality and Usability Lab of T-Labs/TU Berlin, we seek applications for a PhD position (German scientific researcher, "Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter", salary according to the BAT IIa or TVÖD/TVL scale) in the area of Instrumental Evaluation of Synthesized Speech Quality. The aim is to develop algorithms which are able to predict quality aspects of synthesized speech signals (overall quality, intelligibility, naturalness, etc.) on the basis of the speech signal alone. It includes the collection of databases (synthesized speech signals as well as auditory judgments), the analysis of
the data, as well as the development, the implementation and the evaluation of prediction algorithms. The work is integrated into a collaborative project with the University of Kiel (Germany) which is funded by the German Research Foundation, DFG.

The ideal candidate would have a Master degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Communcation Sciences or a related discipline, good hands-on experience with speech signal analysis, some background on quality perception and judgment processes, and some background in speech and language. The willingness to work in an international and interdisciplinary team with communication in English is a must; however, because German speech databases will be produced and analyzed, a good knowledge of the German language is also helpful. The position is linked to a project from which funding can be guaranteed for 24 months, with an initial start-off period of 3-6 months; for the subsequent period of the PhD, additional funding is expected which however cannot be guaranteed at this moment.

Applications including a CV, a motivation letter, copies of the most important certificates and 1-2 references should be sent to
