Nuance is seeking an experienced Speech Scientist in speech recognition
who possesses a strong background in natural language understanding,
speech dialogue systems, and statistical language modeling.  The ideal
candidate will have at least 5 years of experience building speech
applications using statistical language models, and be familiar with the
issues that arise in the modeling of a variety of languages, including
Asian languages. 
Candidates should be completely comfortable working in a UNIX-based
computing environment, be familiar with scripting languages such as Perl
and Python, and ideally have experience writing code in C.  Candidates
should enjoy working in a fast-paced, collaborative atmosphere that
applies speech science in a commercial, result-driven and customer
oriented setting. 

As a Speech Scientist in the Embedded Professional Services group, you
will work on leading edge NLU technologies for speech recognition in
automotive applications, covering a broad range of activities in all
project phases, including the design, development, and optimization of
the system. 

Representative duties include: 
- Train statistical language models for speech recognition and natural
language understanding in commercial products in a variety of languages
- Identify or gather suitable text for training language models 
- Design, develop, and test semantic classifier rules and models
- Optimize accuracy of applications by analyzing performance and tuning
statistical language models, pronunciations, and acoustic models within
CPU and memory constraints of embedded platforms
- Identify recognition challenges and assess accuracy feasibility during
the design and pre-sales phase of a natural language speech application
- Contribute to innovativie speech UI design for natural language speech
- Work closely with Sr. Research Scientists to incorporate latest R&D
progress into customer projects and to provide feedback from customer
specific implementations to our R&D department for further enhancements
in our core product and tools
- Generate and present client-facing reports
- Act as technical lead on more intensive client projects
- Develop methodologies, scripts, procedures that improve efficiency and
- Develop tools and enhance algorithms that facilitate training and
tuning of recognition components


- MSc in Computer Science, Engineering, Computational Linguistics,
Physics, Mathematics, or related field
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills and ability to
troubleshoot issues
- Several years experience with statistical language modeling
- Strong programming skills! Preferably Perl or Python
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English. 
- Ability to scope work taking technical, business and time-frame
constraints into consideration 
- Ability to supervise or mentor junior staff
- Strong organizational skills. 
- Ability and willingness to occasionally travel and visit customers
within North America, Asia and Europe
- Works well independently and collaboratively in team settings in
fast-paced environment

Beneficial Skills
- PhD or equivalent research experience in Computer Science,
Engineering, Computational Linguistics, Physics, Mathematics, or related
- Strong programming skills in either Perl, Python, C, Java, or Matlab
- 5 years or more experience deploying speech recognition applications
in commercial applications. 
- Good knowledge of speech recognition theory 
- User Interface development experience
- Strong pattern recognition, linguistics, signal processing, or
acoustics knowledge
- Operational knowledge of additional languages
