PhD GRANT IN COMPUTATIONAL LINGUISTICS, DIALOGUE PROCESSING

The Graduate School "Cognitive Interaction Technology" at Bielefeld
University invites applications for ONE PhD Grant starting in
2011.

The successful candidate will be member of the newly established
Dialogue Systems Group at the Faculty for Linguistics and Literature
of the University, and will be supervised by Prof. David Schlangen. A
current focus of this group is incremental dialogue processing, with a
particular interest in incremental interpretation (using both symbolic
and statistical approaches). Interest in these topics or generally in
dialogue systems and spoken interaction will be expected of the
student.

Ideal candidates for the studentship have an excellent degree in
Computational Linguistics, Linguistics, or Computer Science, and have
shown ability for conducting original research. Prior work on dialogue
systems and/or spoken language processing would be a definite plus.
Good programming skills are important, a keen interest in problem
solving and research is essential.

The studentship will initially run until November 2012, but, subject
to renewal of federal funding for the Center of Excellence and the
Graduate School, will be extended to a total of 36 months. The
grant pays around 1,400 Euro per month as a stipend (i.e., normally
income tax free).

BACKGROUND

The Center of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) at
Bielefeld University has been established in the framework of the
Excellence Initiative as a research center for intelligent systems and
cognitive interaction between humans and technical systems. The CITEC
agenda comprises the central topics of motion intelligence, attentive
systems, situated communication, and memory and learning. It combines
the knowledge of computer scientists, biologists, physicists, sports
scientists, linguists and psychologists in order to understand the
processes and functional constituents of cognitive interaction. In
addition, research and development are directed towards establishing
cognitive interfaces that facilitate the use of complex technical
systems.

APPLICATION

To apply, please send (preferably in electronic form)
- a statement of research interests and/or a sketch of a possible
  PhD project within the parameters explained above;
- a CV, including details of research experience;
- if applicable, (links to) sample publications and / or sample
  programming code; and
- addresses of at least two referees
to the address below.

This position is open until filled.

If you would like to get further information, please don't hesitate to
contact Dr. Schlangen at the address below.

Post-Doctoral Position in Computational Linguistics / Dialogue
Processing at Bielefeld University, Germany
================================================================

The Faculty of Linguistics and Literature, Bielefeld University,
invites applications for a full-time, fixed term (1 yr)
Post-Doctoral Research Associate ("wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter")
position in the Dialogue Systems Group (PI David Schlangen).

Job Description
================

The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to play an active role
in the group. He or she will participate in ongoing projects related
to the investigation of incremental dialogue processing, share
supervision duties (of PhD and MA students), help with running the
laboratory of the group (with audio and video recording, motion
capture, and eye tracking facilities), collaborate on designing and
running pilot experiments and on writing grant proposals. The
development of independent research ideas within the focus of the
group will be encouraged.

The position is limited to a duration of one year; subject to funding
availability, an extension may be possible.

The position is on the TVL-13 payscale (3,000 - 4,500 Euro).

Candidate Profile
=================

The candidate must have, or be nearing completion of, a PhD in
computer science, computational linguistics or a related
discipline. He or she must have excellent programming skills,
and a strong background in one (or more) of the following areas
- emprical study of human--human dialogue interactions
- formal / cognitive modeling of conversational agents
- building practical speech applications (task-oriented systems,
  more conversational systems e.g. in "serious games" settings for
  learning)
as evidenced by a strong publication record.

Background
==========

The Dialogue Systems Group (DSG) is a newly established group at the
Faculty of Linguistics and Literature at Bielefeld University. The
Faculty has a long tradition of work on Dialogue, in collaboration
with the Technical Faculty / Computer Science. DSG is also affiliated
with CITEC, the "Center of Excellence: Cognitive Interaction
Technology", which is a large-scale research center for intelligent
systems and cognitive interaction between humans and technical
systems, bringing together computer scientists, biologists,
physicists, sports scientists, linguists and psychologists with the
aim to understand the processes and functional constituents of
cognitive interaction. DSG is also affiliated with the Collaborative
Research Center on "Alignment in Communication" (SFB 673), which is a
joint effort of Linguistics and Computer Science, bringing together
some 50 researchers in several projects.
These activities underline the status of Bielefeld as one of the
premier locations for studying dialogue and interaction in general.

The mission of the Dialogue Systems Group is to understand the
mechanics of spontaneous, dialogic interaction and to apply this
understanding to the creation of novel human-machine interfaces. From
this follows our focus on both detailed empirical work as well as on
computational methods for modeling language behaviour and related
behaviours. A particular current interest is the modeling of
incremental (or "online") language understanding and production in
situated contexts.

Bielefeld is a mid-sized city in the center of Germany. It is a
pretty, quiet place, surrounded by beautiful forests offering
many possibilites for recreational outdoor activities. Bielefeld is
connected to Germany's high-speed rail system, and its central
location means that most metropolitan areas in Germany (Berlin,
Dusseldorf / Cologne, Frankfurt, Hamburg) can be reached easily.

Application
===========

The position is open until filled, but candidates are encouraged to
send in applications before May 31st 2011 (or notify us informally of
their interest).

To apply, please send (preferably in electronic form)
- a statement of research interests
- a CV, including details of research experience
- (links to) sample publications and / or sample programming code; and
- addresses of at least two referees
