PhD Studentship in Interaction Mining
Queen Mary, University of London - School of Electronic Engineering and 
Computer Science


Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship starting in September 
2011 to undertake research in the area of interaction mining: 
automatically extracting useful information from human conversational 
interaction. The studentship is based at the School of Electronic 
Engineering and Computer Science at Queen Mary, University of London and 
will be supervised by Dr. Matthew Purver 
(http://www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/~mpurver/) of the Interaction Media and 
Communication research group and Dr Tassos Tombros 
(http://www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/~tassos/) of the Risk and Information 
Management research group.

The successful candidate will perform research at the interface between 
dialogue processing and information retrieval, combining rule-based 
models of dialogue structure with robust statistical methods to 
automatically detect and summarise events in conversation: decisions 
made in business meetings, answers to questions in radio broadcasts, 
agreements and disagreements in social media and so on.

Candidates should have a first or upper second (2:1) honours degree or 
equivalent in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Mathematics, 
Physics, or a related field, and be able to demonstrate strong 
mathematical and analytical skills. Good programming skills and a 
background in natural language processing, computational linguistics or 
information retrieval are also required.

The studentship funded by EECS Studentship will cover student fees and a 
tax-free stipend starting at £15,590 per annum and is available to 
candidates of all nationalities.
