Post-doctoral Research Opportunity in Speech Recognition and Synthesis
at Idiap Research Institute

Would you like to work in the Swiss Alps, in a wine growing region,
with some of the best skiing and hiking in Europe?

Idiap Research Institute is seeking a post-doctoral (or equivalent)
researcher for application oriented research in automatic speech
recognition and synthesis. The emergence of hidden Markov model (HMM)
based text to speech synthesis has recently created a wide open
research area involving the same fundamental technology being used for
both speech recognition and synthesis. Applications include
personalisation and translation, as well as low bit rate coding and
dialogue. Research issues encompass acoustic and language modelling,
adaptation and feature representation.

Such research can only be performed in the context of a team with the
appropriate organisational, software and data infrastructure (such as
that at Idiap). In this sense, whilst the successful candidate will
be expected to perform world-class research in HMM based recognition
and synthesis, he or she will also be required to take a role in the
organisation and maintenance of the infrastructure.

o PhD or equivalent in an area related to speech recognition and
o Excellent programming, scripting and writing skills
o Ability to work in a team

Whilst Idiap functions day to day in English, we are based in French
speaking Switzerland and a working knowledge of one or more of the
Swiss languages would be a distinct advantage.

o Idiap is building a culturally diverse research community and
strongly encourages applications from female and minority candidates.
o Prospective candidates should apply through the Idiap Online
Recruitment System (ORS) only, and applications should contain a cover
letter, CV, statement of research interests and accomplishments, and
names and email addresses of 3 references.
o Start date is flexible, but applications received by the end of
September 2011 will receive full consideration.
