The Fourth Named Entities Workshop (NEWS 2012)

      - Shared Task on Transliteration

An ACL 2012 Workshop on 12-14 July 2012, Jeju, Korea

      Workshop website: http://translit.i2r.a-star.edu.sg/news2012/

      Paper submission portal: https://www.softconf.com/acl2012/news2012/

      Shared task white paper:

Named Entities (NE) play a crucial role in many monolingual and multilingual

Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Information Retrieval (IR) tasks, such

as document search, clustering, information extraction, etc. The phenomenal

growth of the Internet data and the dramatic changes in the user

especially among the non-English speaking parts of the world, has made

identification, association and transformation Named Entities across

languages a critical path problem for most NLP and IR Tasks.

The Fourth Workshop on Named Entities (NEWS 2012) together with a Shared

on Transliteration is a continuous effort on top of the success of the first

Named Entities Workshop (NEWS 2009) in conjunction with ACL-IJCNLP 2009, the

second Named Entities Workshop (NEWS 2010) in conjunction with ACL 2010 and

the third Named Entities Workshop (NEWS 2011) in conjunction with IJCNLP

NEWS 2012 will continue the tradition to run a Shared Task on

which aims to provide a common platform for benchmarking the transliteration

approaches and systems across many languages. The details of Shared Task

be described in the Shared Task Whitepaper.

NEWS 2012 seeks to build on the foundations established in NEWS 2009, 2010
and 2011.

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers interested in

aspects of NEs in natural language text. The shared task in this workshop

cover more language pairs and more scopes of evaluation tasks.

Topics of Interest:

This workshop invites original research contributions on all aspects of
Named Entities

(NEs), including identification, analysis, extraction, mining,
transformation and

applications to NLP and IR systems. The topics of interest include, but are

limited to the following:

1. NE Analysis

Distributional characteristics of NEs in mono- and multi-lingual text

      Orthographic/phonetic characteristics of NE

2, NE Annotated Data

Annotated data sets in specific languages & Creation experiences

3. Monolingual and Multilingual NE Identification & processing

      Named Entity Recognition

4. Named Entity Recognition (NER) approaches & evaluation

      Monolingual NE set expansion

Cross-lingual NE data identification & mapping

      Cross-lingual NE data mining

Social Network Analysis and Entity Resolution

5. Machine Transliteration

      Statistical transliteration approaches & evaluation

6. NE for IR

      NE for Monolingual IR

      NE Translation/Transliteration for CLIR

7. NE in Social Media

      Fuzzy matching of Named Entities

      Multilingual matching of Named Entities

De-duplication of entities across social media
