===== 2 paid PhD positions available on human non-native speech perception in noise ====
Centre for Language Studies, Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands
You will participate as a PhD student in the project “Ignoring the merry in marry: The effect of individual differences in attention and proficiency on non-native spoken-word recognition in noise”. This project is funded by a VIDI Grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research and directed by Dr. Odette Scharenborg.
The project attempts to understand why spoken-word recognition in background noise is so much harder in a non-native than in a native language by investigating the roles of an individual’s attention skills and proficiency in the non-native language on spoken-word recognition processes. Your research will focus on the effect of listening in a non-native language and in background noise on word selection (project 1) or word activation and recognition (project 2). Methodologies that will be used include listening experiments, cognitive tests, and computational modelling.

The deadline for application is April 2, 2013.
The envisaged starting date of the PhD projects is May 1 - September 1, 2013.
